This under stairs storage was inspired by traditional Japanese modular Tansu, specifically the Kaidan-dansu style which was constructed in a stepped style to make use of structural dead space in a home. They were designed to be fitted in under eaves or even used as stairs to an upper floor.

The stepped design is a fun way to practically fill the space and provide a lot of visual interest.

Making the tansu out of a variety of different size boxes which are the full depth of the staircase allows the user to be able to easily store almost any sized item, not to mention the large volume of storage available.
